چکیده

Saliency maps are used to predict the visual stimulus raised from a certain region in a scene. Most approaches to calculate the saliency in a scene can be divided into three consecutive steps: extraction of feature maps, calculation of activation maps, and the combination of activation maps. In the past two decades, several new saliency estimation approaches have emerged. However, most of these approaches are not freely available as source code, thus requiring researchers and application developers to reimplement them. Moreover, others are freely available but use different platforms for their implementation. As a result, employing, evaluating, and combining existing approaches is time consuming, costly, and even error-prone (e.g., when reimplementation is required). In this paper, we introduce the Saliency Sandbox, a framework for the fast implementation and prototyping of saliency maps, which employs a flexible architecture that allows designing new saliency maps by combining existing and new approaches such as Itti & Koch, GBVS, Boolean Maps and many more. The Saliency Sandbox comes with a large set of implemented feature extractors as well as some of the most popular activation approaches. The framework core is written in C++; nonetheless, interfaces for Matlab and Simulink allow for fast prototyping and integration of already existing implementations. Compressed-Sampling-Based Image Saliency Detection in the Wavelet Domain

When watching natural scenes, an overwhelming amount of information is delivered to the Human Visual System (HVS). The optic nerve is estimated to receive around 108 bits of information a second. This large amount of information can’t be processed right away through our neural system. Visual attention mechanism enables HVS to spend neural resources efficiently, only on the selected parts of the...

Graph-based Visual Saliency Model using Background Color

Visual saliency is a cognitive psychology concept that makes some stimuli of a scene stand out relative to their neighbors and attract our attention. Computing visual saliency is a topic of recent interest. Here, we propose a graph-based method for saliency detection, which contains three stages: pre-processing, initial saliency detection and final saliency detection. The initial saliency map i...

Weakly Supervised Top-down Salient Object Detection

Top-down saliency models produce a probability map that peaks at target locations specified by a task/goal such as object detection. They are usually trained in a fully supervised setting involving pixel-level annotations of objects. We propose a weakly supervised top-down saliency framework using only binary labels that indicate the presence/absence of an object in an image. First, the probabi...

SUN: A Bayesian framework for saliency using natural statistics.

We propose a definition of saliency by considering what the visual system is trying to optimize when directing attention. The resulting model is a Bayesian framework from which bottom-up saliency emerges naturally as the self-information of visual features, and overall saliency (incorporating top-down information with bottom-up saliency) emerges as the pointwise mutual information between the f...

A Novel Method to Study Bottom-up Visual Saliency and its Neural Mechanism

In this study, we propose a novel method to measure bottom-up saliency maps of natural images. In order to eliminate the influence of top-down signals, backward masking is used to make stimuli (natural images) subjectively invisible to subjects, however, the bottom-up saliency can still orient the subjects attention. To measure this orientation/attention effect, we adopt the cueing effect parad...
